“A Child Called It” is the very moving story about the heart wrenching childhood of Dave Pelzer. He had one of the most horrible childhoods anyone can imagine filled with severe physical, mental, and emotional abuse. The tortures he describes made me cringe. To think that a child had to endure such horrors is, at times, overwhelming. But the book is also a celebration in the fact that he made it through such horrible things to become a successful, “normal” adult. This is a favorite of our students.

One of my reading teachers loaded it on her NOOK recently and encouraged me to do the same just today. bn.com here I come.
ReplyDeleteThis is one book we can not keep on the shelf. Everytime we get a copy a kid checks it out and never returns it.
ReplyDeleteWe have trouble keeping this one in the library. I think we have had 3 copies permanently borrowed.
ReplyDeleteThis is a book that's been on my "list" for years, but I've never gotten around to it. I'm afraid it would really depress me. I just noticed that we have Pelzer's book on his teenage years in the Lang Library, though, so I may just have to read "A Child Called It" first and then move on to the one in our collection.
ReplyDeleteI have not read the book, but I saw Pelzer on Oprah years ago when he had just finished his book about his adult life. I've want to read them but just do think I can handle the emotions it will bring.
ReplyDeleteI don't know where I've been, but I've never heard of Dave Pelzer. It looks like a fascinating read.
ReplyDeleteWe, too, have trouble keeping this popular title on the shelves. We have the others that Dave Pelzer has written and we also have copies in Spanish. Good for students who want an interesting read and who do not want fiction.
